Biodiesel, derived from biomass, a candidate for replacing diesel oil (petroleum diesel), is one of the most promising, due to the similarity between the two fuels combined with the less polluting characteristics of biodiesel. However, biodiesel has a lower specific heat per unit volume and has a higher production cost, making its consumption in place of diesel oil unfeasible. Studies are being carried out with a view to optimizing the industrial process of biodiesel synthesis, as well as proposing methods to intensify this process, aiming to make it economically viable. This project aimed to optimize the industrially adopted biodiesel synthesis process, substituting methanol for ethanol, using refined linseed oil as a source of triglycerides and sodium hydroxide as a catalyst, in batches, and intensifying it by transferring it to continuous flow in a microreactor.
