Silvya Stuchi Maria-Engler
Silvya Stuchi Maria-Engler (PI), Leader of Biology of Skin and Melanoma Group, is Associate Professor at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the Department of Clinical Analyses and Toxicology, School of Pharmaceutical Science, with extensive track record in the development of alternative methods to animal tests. She has led the development of in-vitro 3D human skin models, which can provide answers to physiological/pathological questions that cannot be solved solely using the traditional 2D cell culture. The main advantage is the excellent predictive capability of these models minimizing the generation of in-vivo data. Those in-vitro models have been successfully applied to assess the efficacy and safety of skin care and pharmaceutical ingredients and anti-tumoral. In the melanoma field, the group is dedicated to uncovering strategies to overcome chemoresistence employing both monolayer culture and organotypic models that simulate invasion in reconstructed skin containing melanoma. We dissect molecular pathways of resistant cells and aim at identifying pharmacologically tractable targets that may be used in combination to enhance therapeutic response.
