Sandro Rogerio de Almeida is Associate Professor at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the Department of Clinical Analyses and Toxicology, School of Pharmaceutical Science. Graduated in Biomedical Sciences from the Federal University of São Paulo (1993), Masters in Microbiology and Immunology UNIFESP (96), PhD in Sciences (Microbiology and Immunology) UNIFESP (99), post-doctorate from Washington University - Saint Louis - USA (2000), Guest Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology, UNIFESP (2001). The main objective of our research is related to the characterization of immune mechanisms involved in protection against diseases caused by fungi. In recent years, we focused our attention on the study of animal and human models of fungal infection. Several approaches, strains of mice, as well as systemic and local immune modulation procedures have been used in an attempt to obtain a better understanding of the immunoprotective mechanisms operating in these infections. In fungal disease in humans, the approach is to identify markers of immune response that may be selectively associated with infection stages.
